The MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS of Peru are: Cusco “the navel of the world” which is the oldest living city of America and ancient capital of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu sacred city of the Incas built in the hills of the orient branch of the cordillera de los andes in the frontier to the Amazonian jungle, the Inca citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the archaeological centers of Wiracocha Raqchi and Choquekirao opened to the public recently. To the southeast of the country is located the high plateau of Collao where is situated the city of Puno and the Lake Titicaca –the highest navigable lake of the world, 3810 meters above sea level. Its waters are dark blue and their islands are inhabited by descendants of native Americans such as Quechuas and Aymaras who live in the Islands of Los Uros, Island Taquile, Amantani and Anapia. To the visitors who love people and nature it will be very interesting The Chullpas of Sillustani, Llachon, Charcas, Suasi Island and
Lampa. There exist also the colonial temples of Chucuito, Juli, Pomata and other attractions.

South of the country is situated Arequipa also known al the “white city” because the color of its colonial plazas, temples and mansions which were built with “sillar” a volcanic stone-like material. It is a must the visit to the Convent of Santa Catalina. Magnificent volcanoes of Misti, Chachani and Picchupicchu surround the city. In this region it is also located two of the deepest canyons of Peru and the world: Colca Canyon and Cotahuasi Canyon. In the peruvian coast, south of Lima, is located Ica which is a region surrounded by desserts, dunes and green valleys. Here are situated the mysterious Nazca Lines and the National Reserve of Paracas, mainly the Ballestas Islands sanctuary of sea lions, penguins and other birdlife, like the “parihuana” that inspired the colors of Peruvian national flag (red and white). In Paracas you may see also the “Candelabro”, a figure in the shape of candlestick lying in a slope of the mountain, similar to Nazca lines.

Lima is the capital of modern Peru. As the ancient capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru during the Spanish colony it was one of the most important cities of South America. It was known as “The City of the Kings”. The main colonial attractions are the temples of the Catedral,
San Francisco, San Pedro and the colonial mansions such as Torre Tagle Palace and many others. Near Lima there are also ancient pre-Columbian settlements such as Pachacamac, Puruchuco and the recent discoveries of the great Caral Culture more than 4000 years old. Nowadays Lima is a modern metropolis with 8 million people that represents one third of the population and almost two thirds of the economic activity of Peru.

North of Lima and towards the andes it is located Huaraz and the Callejón de Huaylas wich is an Andean valley limited by the east with the Cordillera Blanca of perpetual white snow and by the west with the Cordillera Negra of lowest altitude. This is an ideal place for the practice of adventure tourism doing trekking, mountain climbing, Huascaran, river running and other sports. Towards the east is the Callejon de Conchucos where it is located Chavin de Huantar considered until recently as the cradle of Andean civilization. It has 3000 years of antiquity. Further north there are the cities of Trujillo, that stands out by its beautiful Spanish colonial houses and the pre Columbian sites of Chan-chán, Huaca del Sol y de la Luna and El Brujo silent witnesses of the glorious pre Inca past. Then we have the cities of Chiclayo and Lambayeque where it was discovered in 1987 the remains of Lord of Sipan, an important chief of Mochica Culture. Besides there are three important museums, Tumbas Reales de Sipan, Sican and Brunning. Cajamarca is located in the northern sierra of the country. It is an ancient Inca city where the last Inca Atahualpa was captured and executed by Pizarro. Cajamarca is famous also by its fantastic landscape, its colonial temples and mansions, the Inca Baths, The Ransom Room of Inca Atahualpa, Otuzco funerary niches, Cumbemayo and Kuntur Wasi a pre Inca culture. Finally there is Chachapoyas a city founded by the Spaniards, which is part of the territory of the Chachapoyas Culture that built the famous fortress of Kuelap a place only compared with Machupicchu. Among other attractions there are the sarcophagus of Karajia and the recently discovered Inca Mummies of Leimebamba thanks to explorations in the Laguna de los Condores.

The Amazon Jungle is almost half of the territory of Peru. This unique region is covered by woods, rivers, lagoons, swamps, ”cochas” and perhaps the richest flora and fauna of the world. In this territory flows many of the affluents to the great Amazon River, the largest of the planet. Iquitos is the main city of the Peruvian Amazonian region where stars the ecological tours to the National Reserve of Pacaya-Samiria. From Pucallpa another oriental city there are navigation tours through the Ucayali River and Lake Yarinacocha. Finally from the city of Puerto Maldonado, near Cusco, one may navigate through the large Madre de Dios River to the Natural Reserve of Tambopata-Candamo or the National Park of Bahuaja-Sonene Heatth. Finally there is the famous Manu National Park declared by UNESCO as the World Biosphere Reserve, which is acceded mainly from
Cusco.
